Yesterday’s post got me wondering just how many Best Of albums I had, so I counted them up. It’s more than I would have guessed! I really don’t know that I could put these in any sort of order, so I thought I’d split them in to two groups instead: artists/groups I only have a best of album of, and artists/groups I have other albums from. And, yes, I’m keeping the awkward phrasing because it amuses me.
Some of these I was surprised to find I had.
Best Of Albums by Artists I Have Other Albums From
- The Beach Boys – By no means do I have anywhere near all their albums, but I do have several. I got one of their Best Of albums because it had new songs (or maybe redone old ones?)
- Phil Collins – I might actually have all of his albums, but I bought the Best Of at a time when it had songs I didn’t have anywhere else.
- Sheryl Crow – New songs.
- Genesis – I have one other Genesis album (Invisible Touch) mostly because I have good memories associated with it. Frankly, I don’t actually like a lot of Genesis’s stuff (or prog rock in general, it seems), so I got this because I wanted the ones I did like.
- Michael Jackson – I have “Thriller” as well. Fun fact: when I first started meeting online friends face-to-face, I would give them the Thriller album on CD the first time I met them. It came down to either that or a Briteney Spears album, and I figured the MJ would be more appreciated/actually listened to.
- Led Zeppelin – I bought IV as well because I was told it was awesome, but it turns out LZ isn’t really my thing, other than Stairway and maybe one or two other songs. Meh.

Tie between Kiss and the Mills Bros. for best of I’d never guess you had.

A pretty wide divide, I know!
“Beth” by KISS has been one of my favorite songs for several years.

You are doing yourself a SERIOUS disservice by not owning solo albums from The Who and David Bowie

There are like three Bowie songs I like, and that’s it. I’ve tried, I just can’t do it :(

LOL! The only songs that I can think of off the top of my head by David Bowie are the ones that I grew up on during the early to mid 80’s which are: “Let’s Dance”, “Modern Love”, “China Girl” and the remake of “Dancing In The Streets” that he did with Mick Jagger. I heard the song “Fame” because it was popular and the song “Under Pressure” that he did with Freddie Mercury and that is because I wanted to hear what music was used for the song “Ice Ice Baby” by Vanilla Ice. David Bowie just can not carry a tune to me.

For me it’s Heroes, Ziggy Stardust, Major Tom, and Under Pressure. And I actually prefer the Wallflowers’ version of Heroes.

I’ve been having a hard time with “Best of” albums lately – either I like the band well enough to want the “rest of” their stuff, or I don’t like them well enough to even spin the disc. Very narrow middle ground. I’m holding on to a couple of Greatest Hits albums just for the bonus songs – Soundgarden’s “Bleed Together” is my favorite of their songs. But I’ve actually recently sold quite a few of them.

That’s how I ended up with the concept of “zuneworthy.” I can’t tell you how many albums I’ve bought for one song.

It just occurred to me that I am still thinking about picking up the Goo Goo Dolls greatest-hits. It’s the closest thing I’m going to get to a Johnny-only discography. :/ I guess there are other considerations!
