I guess I just like liking things

Pop Culture Time Machine is when I choose what role I’d go back and play if I were given the choice (and a time machine).

I’m not a huge fan of musicals. I mean, I can watch them and I’ve seen plenty of them, but if I were making a list of Favorite Genres they wouldn’t make the top three. I will admit that I sometimes forget movies like Aladdin and The Lion King are musicals, so that probably skews my thinking. When someone says “musicals” I think of things like Grease, The Sound of Music, and Oklahoma, shortly before I roll my eyes and say “uggggggggggggggggggh.” I guess I need to figure out my brain and make it act more consistently, because I can’t hate on musicals if I’ll bust out into “Friend Like Me” without much provocation.

Even worse is the fact that, even though I profess to dislike musicals, today’s choice is actually one of my favorite movies of all time. Top twenty, for sure. in fact, it’s my love of the movie that drove today’s topic, rather than the topic driving me to find a subject. So who would I be?

To be clear, I'm choosing Seymour. He's the person on the left there.

Seymour Krelborn in Little Shop of Horrors (1986).

Rick Moranis was perfect for the part, so my choosing to take it would be messing with a classic, I’m aware and I’m sorry. But I have my reasons for wanting to play the role:

  • A musical with comedy, sci-fi, and horror all mixed together? Come on!
  • Any time “Suddenly Seymour” comes up in the rotation on my Zune, I belt it, and it’s totally in my range.
  • Getting to hobnob on set with Steve Martin, Bill Murray, Ellen Greene, John Candy, and Christopher Guest. Sorry to repeat myself, but… come on!

Honestly, if my local civic theater ever puts the play on again (I missed it when they did it several years back), I would be tempted to try out for it, and I’m not one for a) being in plays and b) singing in front of people. I think the role would supersede/negate my fears.
